Craving a craft?
Craft beer may sound like a buzzword you hear people say in the pub, but it actually refers to the brewing practice behind the beverage.
Unlike mainstream beers produced in mass, craft beers are made by breweries that typically strive to achieve bold and unique flavours with a focus on careful brewing and attention to detail.
The flavours of a craft beer can vary, but popular choices tend to be IPAs that are hoppy and bitter or malty and sweet stouts and amber ales. You may also find smoky flavours that use notes of chocolate or even coffee, or tropical and fruity flavours. Craft beers enjoy a connection with the local community surrounding their brewery – with regional styles and locally-sourced ingredients creating that perfectly crafted flavour.
At Greene King, we offer a wide selection, so stop by your local and discover what's behind the bar at your nearest craft beer pub.
Brewing is at the heart of our backstory
Greene King Brewery dates back to 1799 as a traditional brewery, with a firm commitment to quality beer and expert craftsmanship. The centuries that have followed may have seen us evolve into one of the largest pub companies, but we remain deeply rooted in our proud brewing heritage.
Often regarded as the home of Greene King, our Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds has brewed for over 200 years, with a brewery on the site since 1700. Brewing in this historical town can even be traced back to the days of the Doomsday book in 1086.
In fact, we still draw water from the chalk wells found underneath the brewery. This method has been used for almost 1,000 years, and was a popular practice by the Benedictine monks of the nearby St Edmund cathedral.
Our Victorian brewhouse was built in 1938 and continues to brew all of our beers. It works by using gravity to move the ingredients from floor to floor, and all the beer is brewed using natural ingredients.
Our Belhaven Brewery in Dunbar is the oldest working brewery in Scotland. Located in the rolling barley fields of East Lothian, it was established in 1719 and is home to the nation’s favourite ales and stouts.
Our range of beers
Not only do we boast a generous choice of classic ales, but we also have a portfolio of craft beers with innovative flavours to satisfy modern customers. Here are some of our popular craft beer picks:
Prior Life All Day IPA
This unfiltered beer boasts a refreshing taste, featuring tropical notes of lychee and mango, along with a citrus aroma. It's an easy-drinking, All Day IPA at 3.4% ABV and its name is inspired by the Benedictine monks of Bury St Edmunds, who would brew low-strength beer as a safer alternative to water.
Flint Eye
This 4.5% ABV lager has subtle notes of pine with an aroma of orange peel and citrus. The name pays homage to the Neolithic flint-tipped arrowheads, which can be found at our Westgate brewery.
Level Head
With refreshing tropical and citrus notes and a crisp finish, this 4%ABV beer makes for easy drinking. The unique name is a nod to St Edmund, the former patron saint of England, who was beheaded by Vikings in 869. Legend has it that a ghostly wolf guarded his severed head and later led his followers to it, allowing his body to be reunited and his path to sainthood secured.
Hazy Day Fruity IPA
Hazy Day Fruity IPA, at 4.3% ABV, is a smooth fruity IPA with orange, citrus and tropical notes. Its name is in reference to the 16th-century Bury St Edmunds tradition, where locals would gather to heckle those sentenced to a day in the pillory.
